I’m Not in Pain, So Do I Really Need to Get a Root Canal?

Woman wondering if she needs a root canal without feeling pain

Patients who have a severe toothache often need to get a root canal. Bacteria are likely attacking the tooth’s inner pulp, which can cause intense discomfort. However, feeling pain isn’t always a requirement for this treatment. In fact, you may be completely fine, and your dentist might still recommend it! Here’s why, and other signs you need this procedure to protect your oral health.

Do I Have to Be in Pain in Order to Get a Root Canal?

When you need a root canal, that’s because there’s an infection inside a tooth. Bacteria have entered the inner chamber and are causing problems. When left untreated, you risk losing the structure or it spreading to your nearby teeth and gums. Pain is often one symptom that you may feel during this case, but it’s not the only sign.

The problem itself might’ve been found before an issue was caused, so your dentist might recommend this service even if an infection hasn’t yet developed. For instance, major damage can expose the pulp, but an urgent dental visit on the same day can get the situation handled before it gets worse.

In other cases, you might’ve been in pain, and it went away on its own. While you might’ve finally got relief, the issue at large hasn’t been taken care of. Dental infections can’t heal on their own, so they will only cause more problems the longer you wait to get treatment.

What Are Other Signs I Need a Root Canal?

With all that said, it’s important you recognize any other signs that mean you should get checked out by your dentist. Here are a few to familiarize yourself with:

  • Have sensitivity to hot, cold, sweet, and acidic foods.
  • There’s a noticeably dark spot on a particular tooth.
  • Your gums are swollen, or you have a painful pimple-like bump.

No matter what, you can always ask your provider for the clarification you need. They will be able to walk you through the examination they did and any X-rays they’ve taken. That way, you can understand more about why they concluded that you need a root canal and feel confident deciding for your oral health.
